Skate Canada’s Flagship Learn-to-Skate Program

CanSkate is the foundation for all ice sports.

Delivered in a dynamic and engaging format, it develops balance, control, and confidence through nationally designed skill progressions.

  • Led structurally by our Head Coach with guidance from program assistants

  • We keep it small and supportive: up to 8 skaters / group

  • Continuous assessment and award progression

  • A fun, high-energy environment

  • Shared-ice format: builds community and inspires possibility

Ideal for: Beginners, hockey/ringette prep, and future figure skaters.

Recreational Stream: Structured & Progressive Figure Skating Development

STARSkate is Skate Canada’s comprehensive figure skating development stream. It blends skill building, performance training, testing, and competition in a progressive, achievable format.

  • 2-3+ weekly sessions recommended

  • Balanced approach for individuals learning to figure skate or with multiple activities

  • We focus on strong technical development without high-performance commitments (on and off ice)

  • Competitions with ranked flights of 6 - 8 skaters on average: more medalling opportunities

Ideal for: Figure skaters aiming to achieve their personal best in a flexible, long-term format that builds confidence and technique. Develop requirements for future coaching opportunities at Regional, Provincial and National levels.

As a smaller club with strong coaches and rounded expertise, we support higher technical training with an emphasis on: refined edges and skills; controlled freeskate elements; CPC centred programs designed by international choreographers highlighting artistry and technical composition; athletic strength, carriage and form.

Alongside of athletic conditioning we foster a positive and supportive, “personal best” environment that nurtures long-term mental health and character development.

Our coaches support athletes that compete in Singles FreeSkate and Artistic, Ice Dance Singles and Pairs, and Pairs.

We’re one of the few clubs in Alberta that supports the development of Pairs skating specifically. We currently train the top-ranked, Alberta Pre-Novice team from Skate Canada Trophy (10th nationally).

We’re the only club in Okotoks with coaches that actively train nationally and internationally ranked athletes. It’s a privilege and joy to offer this calibre of coaching and opportunity in our small-town community.

  • Skater development is centred around individualized goals - structured and coordinated by our Head Coach, Barb Westhaver. A request to discuss skater development can be made in advance of registration and following skating sessions once actively training.

  • Proper skating attire must be worn at all times. Figure skating attire includes appropriate athletic wear such as skating dresses/skirts, tights and/or leggings, figure skating pants, fitted tops/sweaters without hoods and waist-length jackets. Pajamas, track pants with elasticized ankles, jeans or other denim-cut pants are not permitted. Offensive language or graphics on apparel won’t be tolerated. Long hair is tied back and hair must be kept off the face. Coaches have the right to dismiss skaters from the ice if the dress code isn’t adhered to for safety and optimal training.

For CanSkate - warm layers, jackets, snowpants, mitts, and hockey gloves are all permitted. CSA helmets are mandatory - cages are optional. The goal is comfort, warmth and safety to ensure skaters have an enjoyable experience on the ice.

  • Please arrive 15–30 minutes before your scheduled ice time to ensure you are fully prepared and ready rink-side when the session begins. This allows time for proper warm-up, equipment check, dressing, and washroom breaks before heading onto the ice.

  • Please email info.bigrocksc@gmail.com with as much notice as possible, so coaches can adjust their lesson plans accordingly. Refunds will not be processed for missed sessions, as you’re reserving a limited spot at the time of registration.
